thrive >>> a breaking news in san jose. we have multiple crime scenes at this hour. police are spread across many blocks and a major exit off 101 is now closed. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> we want to show you the two locations we're talking about. all of this unfolding in east san jose. we're about tully road and lanai. there is a second location that. george kiriyama is here but we begin with jean who joins us live in san jose. what location are you at? >> i'm on tully road between king and highway 101. this whole thing started around 9:00 tonight. police say an officer was shot just around the corner from where we are at tully and lanai. we're told he was grazed by a bullet and that police are looking for one suspect and possibly more. now you're taking look down tully road right now. you can see that's the highway 101 overpass. you can see there are lots of police officers around here. they have blocked the road while they search for the suspect. there are lots of stores here and gas stations and restaurants, and they are all empty. police have cleared eve

. >>> back from thanksgiving break in full force. teachers in san jose's evergreen district are protesting, trying to pressure the district to return to the bargaining table. but the district says no deal. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us from san jose this evening. kris, why not return to the bargaining table? what is the problem here? >> reporter: hi there, raj. hopefully you can hear me over the chanting. this is a very serious group about getting their message out. we estimate as many as 400 teachers and supporters turned out today to make their point to the district that they need to return to the bargaining table. they are trying to get their community also to put the pressure on the district. the teachers march carrying signs, getting honks and hollers of support along the way. after the last contract negotiating session in october, the district asked the public employer relations board to declare an impasse, setting the ball in motion for a mediator to help decide the next contract with the district. the district said it cannot afford a 1% pay raise for teachers, and can no lon

tellez. >> i'm jon kelley. we begin with the news in the south bay. an all out manhunt in san jose. at this hour, one man is in custody and a $20,000 reward offered for information leading to the arrest of a second suspect. this following four robberies and homicide and officer-involved shooting. bob redell is live at city waha with the latest information after being briefed. quite a situation. >> reporter: along with the mayor's office. good morning, jon. the mayor's office has just upped the reward looking for the second man wanted in connection with the attempted murder of two police officers and the murder of an innocent civilian. police have also just released a sketch of the second suspect who is right now considered to be san jose's public enemy number one. to put an exclamation point on this. the assistant police chief along with mayor chuck reed and the city council participated in the joint news conference that ended an hour ago. the mayor will contribute $10,000 from his budget to raise the reward to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest of suspect number two. po

. >> nbc bay area news starts now. >> good evening. i'm kris sanchez. we begin in san jose where a teenager is under arrest accused of pulling the trigger in a crime spree that claimed the life of one man and threatened the life of a police officer. nbc bay area is live with the very latest and what we know about this young suspect. >> reporter: kris, police say that 15-year-old was arrested in concord yesterday and is being held here on numerous charges, including suspicion of homicide, attempted murder, and armed robbery. san jose police have been looking for this suspect since last week after police say he and 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks of san jose robbed four businesses, fatally shot a man and started a shootout with police that injured one officer. the teen's alleged accomplice was arrested on november 16th, the night of the incident. today a memorial was held for rory park pettiford, 22-year-old shot during the pair's attempted park in the parking lot at the 7-eleven store in the 400 block of keely boulevard. his brother says he's grateful that the second suspect is now behind bars

-fire agreement coming up in a few moments. first, new out of the south bay. a deadly hit-and-run in east san jose has police at this hour searching for answers. according to police, a man was hit by two vehicles after 6:00 a.m. while crossing alum rock avenue. we have bob redell on the scene this morning. he has more details on what is happening out there. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we spoken with a local neighborhood group who does not think this was a fluke. thinks this latest fatality here at alum rock avenue is a symptom of the problems on the road. they are not surprised a person has been hit and killed. this is the third pedestrian to be hit and killed in east san jose. the ninth person when you take into account the entire city of east san jose. the man, that is all we know, was jay walking after 6:00 this morning while it was still dark out and most likely raining. he was attempting to cross alum rock and was 75 feet away from the nearest crosswalk when the car ran into him. the car did speed off and did not stop or return. the police are looking for the driver. it

a recently retired san jose police chief captain. >> we have people that maybe we could take a look at and forgo the process. and i think that the retired captain would be an outstanding selection for an ex-police chief. >> reporter: but the decision is not his. it belongs to the city manager who says that there will be no shortcuts. >> this is a critically important decision for the city of san jose. one of the most visible appointments that we have for them that make the appointments. we want to make sure that they listen to the community and that they are validating what we have heard before and to adjust anything that we'll need for the evaluation based on what we will be hearing now. >> reporter: and that search process is expected to cost the city of san jose $44,000. the process will continue throughout the week with the community meetings at various locations in san jose. the interview process will start up in january. and the new chief, they should be hired by the end of the month about the same time that chief chris moore steps down. reporting live in san jose, cbs 5. >>>

roadwork until 11:00 this morning. westbound drive is looking good. >>> san jose police hope a reward will help entice the community to help them catch a second robber in a violent crime spree that killed an innocent bystander and injured an officer. kira klapper is at the san jose police department. >> reporter: good morning. the police officers association is offering a $10,000 reward, hoping someone can lead them to the accomplice of jonathan wilbanks together they went on a violent crime spree he's already under arrest, police are looking for his partner crime. they don't have a name or description both were said to be wearing ski masks. it began before 7:30 friday night when they robbed a little caesar's on story road, then a gas station, an hour after that a jack-in-the-box. police say the pair didn't hurt anyone until they reached the 7-eleven, where they shot and killed 22-year-old campbell resident in an attempted carjacking. police spotted the pair, the pair initiated a shootout with officers. one officer was grazed at the hip by a bullet before thened up catching wilbanks.
